For my development plan, I chose to focus on learning Blender, a free and open-source 3D software used for creating models, animations, and game assets. Instead of creating a traditional asset pack, I decided to develop a short animated film.
This short film features a robot and demonstrates my ability to complete the full 3D pipeline, including modeling, rigging, animation, lighting, and rendering.
I started by modeling BD-1 from the Star Wars Jedi games by creating a simple blockout. From there, I refined the model to give it all the details and a readable design suitable rigging and animating.
In addition to the character, I created a simple scifi hallway environment. After modeling, I textured all the assets in substance painter.
After I finished modeling BD-1 and the hallway, I started rigging the robot. This was the first time I fully rigged a character and I also setup IK for the first time. Then I created the animations that would define the short film. This includes him walking around, bumping over some sort of container, jumping on a box and looking at a planet through the window.
Then came the most exciting part. Finishing up the short film by adding lighting, cameras, music and sound effects. This is where the animation truly came to life and I am really happy with the end result. I finished up everything in blender, exported the short film and added sounds and music in premiere pro.
